Dr. V. Subramanian was the President of the Sabha for a continuous period of 27 years from 1975. Seldom has an individual merged his identity totally with the institution and worked assiduously for its growth and development. Known for his deep sense of duty, commitment, involvement and responsibility, he stood as a colossus, leading from the front, during the period of despair caused by the destruction of Sabha’s auditorium and its strenuous and prolonged reconstruction from 1990 to 1998. This would remain etched in the memory of the Sabha for years to come. In the year 2002, he was unanimously honoured by being elected President Emeritus of the Sabha for life, in recognition of his yeomen service.

On 29th September 2003 he breathed his last. A bust of Dr. Subramanian was unveiled in the Ground Floor Foyer on 26th January 2004. The Sabha’s Talent Promotion concerts are named after him. A Memorial Lecture is held in his honour on 26th January each year or near thereto, coinciding with his birth anniversary.
